The problem
Small card, many decisions
A business card looks like a simple job until you try to fit a logo, name, title, phone, email, website, address and social handles onto a space the size of a credit card. Most homemade cards try to include everything, shrink the type until it is hard to read, and end up looking like every other template.
A good card makes choices. It decides which two or three details matter most to the people you hand it to, gives them room, and uses the back for the rest or for something memorable: a short line about what you do, a QR code, or simply your logo.
It also has to survive printing. Text too close to the edge gets trimmed, colours shift between screen and paper, and a background that stops at the trim line leaves a white sliver. Those problems are solved in the file, before it goes to the printer.

How it works
Our business card design process
1. Brief
Send the details you want on the card, your logo files and a few cards or brands you like. We ask follow-up questions if anything is unclear.
2. Concepts
Design variations to choose from, typically within two business days. How many concepts you see depends on the package level you choose.
3. Refine
Ask for a different font, colour or layout detail, in writing or with marked-up screenshots. We revise until it matches the brief.
4. Files
Print-ready and digital files, set up to your printer's specifications if you send them.
Print basics
Sizes, bleed and finishes
The standard card in the US and Canada is 3.5 x 2 inches. In much of Europe it is 85 x 55 mm. If you need cards for more than one market, tell us and we will set up both sizes.
Printers ask for bleed: the background extended past the trim line, usually 0.125 inch or about 3 mm on each side, so nothing white shows if the cut is slightly off. They also ask that text and logos stay well inside the trim. Our files include both, so the printer does not have to adjust anything.
Finishes such as spot gloss, foil, rounded corners or heavier stock change how a card is set up. If you plan to use one, mention it in the brief and we will prepare the extra layers your printer needs.

Choosing a business card designer
Look for three things. First, original design: a template card is cheap, but it is also the card your competitor has. Second, correct print files: ask whether bleed, crop marks and colour setup are included, or whether you will have to fix them with the printer. Third, the source file, so adding a new employee or changing a phone number does not mean paying for a new design.
If you already have brand guidelines, ask the designer to work inside them. If you do not, a business card is a sensible place to set a simple palette and font pairing you can reuse on letterheads, flyers and your website.
