A reader browsing an online store decides in a few seconds whether a novel is for them. They read the cover, the category and the first lines of the description, and they are asking one question: is this the kind of story I like? A beautifully written book that answers that question badly will be passed over by exactly the readers who would have loved it.

That is why fiction publishing starts with a decision many authors skip: what is this book, and who is it for? Literary fiction, upmarket book-club fiction and genre fiction (crime, fantasy, science fiction, romance, thriller) are sold to different readers, priced differently and packaged differently. A literary novel dressed as a thriller disappoints thriller readers; a fast-paced thriller with a quiet literary cover never reaches them.

We settle that question first, using comparable recent titles, and every later decision on editing, cover, description and categories follows from it.

Readers and retailers have loose expectations about length. Most adult novels fall roughly between 70,000 and 100,000 words; romance tends to sit around 70,000 to 90,000, crime and thrillers around 70,000 to 100,000, and science fiction and fantasy often run longer, from about 90,000 words up past 120,000 because of the world-building involved.

These are ranges, not rules, and self-published fiction has more freedom than a manuscript submitted to an agent. But a 180,000-word debut fantasy or a 45,000-word crime novel is worth a conversation. Sometimes the right answer is a cut; sometimes it is splitting one book into two, or reframing a short novel as a novella series. We will tell you what the editing pass suggests, not what is easiest to sell you.

Much of fiction's income comes from readers who finish one book and buy the next. If you are writing a series, decisions made now affect every later volume: a cover template that can carry three or ten titles, a consistent naming pattern, a series page and a back-matter section that points readers to what comes next.

Nobody can promise that a novel will sell, reach a chart or find an agent, and we do not. What we can do is remove the avoidable reasons readers put a book back: a story that sags in the middle, a cover from the wrong genre, a description that gives no reason to start. The rest depends on the story, the market and sustained marketing over time.
