The problem

An ebook is not a PDF of your book

A print book has fixed pages. Most ebooks do not: the text reflows to fit the screen and the reader's chosen font and size. Formatting that looked fine in Word, such as manual line breaks, spaces used for indentation, or text boxes, turns into broken paragraphs, odd gaps and missing content when it reflows.

Common ebook complaints in reviews, such as a contents page that does not link, images that are too small to read, or chapters that start halfway down a screen, nearly always trace back to conversion shortcuts. They are easy to avoid when the files are built properly.

Two kinds of ebook

Reflowable or fixed layout

Reflowable

Text adapts to any screen and font size. The right choice for novels, memoirs and most nonfiction, and what most readers expect.

Fixed layout

Every page keeps its design, like a print page. Used for picture books, cookbooks and heavily illustrated titles, and best read on tablets.

File formats

EPUB is the standard; MOBI is finished

EPUB is the file format used across the ebook market. Amazon KDP stopped accepting MOBI files in March 2025 and now asks for EPUB, Word or its own KPF format. If anyone offers to "convert your book to MOBI" for Kindle, that advice is out of date.

You do not need an ISBN to publish a Kindle ebook through KDP. Some other stores and distributors ask for one, and if you use an ISBN for the ebook it must be different from your print ISBNs.

Pricing your ebook

Ebook pricing and royalties

On Amazon.com, KDP's 70% royalty option applies to ebooks priced within a set band; from 7 July 2026 that band is $2.99 to $12.99, widened from the earlier $2.99 to $9.99. Prices outside it earn the 35% rate, and delivery costs are deducted on the 70% option. Other marketplaces and stores have their own rules.

Ebook pricing also depends on genre norms and whether the book is part of a series. We help you set a price that fits both.

Exclusive or wide

Kindle only, or every store?

Enrolling an ebook in KDP Select puts it in Kindle Unlimited and gives access to Amazon promotions, but the ebook must be sold only through Amazon while enrolled. Publishing wide means selling on Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play and library platforms too. Which is better depends on your genre and where your readers buy; we look at both before recommending one.

Questions

Questions about ebook publishing

Still unsure about something? Talk to a specialist — no script, no sales pitch.

EPUB is the standard accepted by the major ebook stores. Amazon KDP no longer accepts MOBI files and asks for EPUB, Word or KPF. We deliver a clean, validated EPUB that you can use on every store you choose. It is tested before delivery.

We can, but we usually work from the Word file instead, because a PDF locks text into fixed pages and converting it directly often breaks paragraphs and hyphenation. If the PDF is all you have, we rebuild the ebook from its text and check it carefully.

Not for Kindle through KDP, which does not require one. Some other stores and distributors do. If you use an ISBN for the ebook, it must be separate from the paperback and hardback ISBNs, because each format is a different product.

Look at comparable titles in your genre first. On Amazon.com, the 70% royalty rate applies to ebooks priced between $2.99 and $12.99 as of July 2026; outside that band the rate is 35%. Series starters are often priced lower to bring readers in.

A reflowable ebook will not look identical, because readers change fonts and sizes and screens vary. It should, however, read cleanly everywhere: consistent headings, working links and images that fit. We test files on phone, tablet and e-reader views before delivery.

KDP Select gives you Kindle Unlimited page reads and Amazon promotions, in exchange for selling the ebook only on Amazon while enrolled. It suits genres where many readers use Kindle Unlimited. If you want library lending or readers on Apple and Kobo, going wide may serve you better.
