Hardback Editions
Hardback Book Publishing
A hardback edition makes your book more durable and more giftable, and gives libraries a format they like. It also costs more to print and has its own rules on size, page count and cover files. We prepare hardback editions properly, alongside or after your paperback.
- Cover files built for hardcover, not resized paperback art
- Platform limits checked before layout
- Revisions included until the brief is met
- No lock-in on standard services
Is it worth it?
When a hardback edition makes sense
For many self-published novels, a hardback sells only a small share of copies, because readers buying online often choose the cheaper paperback or ebook. That does not make it pointless. A hardback can be the edition people buy as a gift, the one libraries prefer for durability, and the one that makes a book feel finished on an author's own table at events.
Hardbacks tend to earn their place for gift books, children's books, cookbooks, memoirs bought by family, and nonfiction where the author wants a premium edition to sell at talks. We will tell you honestly whether one is likely to be worth it for your book.
Binding types
Hardcover styles for self-published books
Case laminate
The cover artwork is printed and laminated directly onto the boards, with no dust jacket. Durable and popular for children's, school and library use. This is the hardcover Amazon KDP offers.
Jacketed hardcover
A separate printed dust jacket wraps the book, with flaps for the description and author bio. IngramSpark offers it at extra cost in a limited set of trim sizes.
Cloth-look hardcover
A linen-textured cover with spine text, usually paired with a dust jacket for a traditional bookshop look. Available from IngramSpark in certain regions and colours.

Platform limits
What the platforms allow
Hardcover options are narrower than paperback options. Amazon KDP, for example, prints hardcovers only as case laminate, offers five trim sizes, and accepts books between 75 and 550 pages. KDP hardcovers are also not eligible for Expanded Distribution, so if you want bookstores and libraries to be able to order your hardback, a wholesale distributor such as IngramSpark is usually the route.
These limits are why we check your page count and trim size against the platform before laying out the hardback edition, not after.
- A check of trim size, page count and binding against your platform's hardcover options
- Interior adjusted for hardback where the trim or margins differ from the paperback
- A case laminate cover file with the wrap allowance the printer requires on every edge
- A dust jacket design with front and back flaps, if you choose a jacketed edition
- A separate ISBN for the hardback, and consistent metadata across editions
- Pricing that covers the higher printing cost of a hardcover
Cover files
Why a hardback cover is not a stretched paperback cover
A case laminate cover wraps around the boards and is folded inside, so the file needs extra artwork on all four edges, and nothing important can sit where the board bends at the hinge. A dust jacket needs flaps with their own text. Simply enlarging the paperback cover usually puts the title too close to the edge or the spine text in the wrong place.
We build hardback covers from the printer's own template for your exact page count, so the artwork, spine and barcode land where they should.
Pricing
How hardback editions are priced
Adding a hardback to an existing paperback is quoted per project, based on whether the interior needs adjusting and whether you want a case laminate cover, a dust jacket or both. We also show you the platform's printing cost, so you can set a list price that leaves a royalty.

Yes. Amazon KDP prints hardcovers on demand as case laminate, with the cover printed directly on the boards and no dust jacket. There are limits on trim size and page count, currently 75 to 550 pages, so we check your book fits before preparing the files.
Not through Amazon KDP, which offers case laminate only. IngramSpark offers jacketed hardcovers at extra cost in certain trim sizes. If a dust jacket matters to you, we can set up the hardback through IngramSpark and keep the paperback on KDP if you prefer.
Yes. Each format is a separate product, so the hardback needs a different ISBN from the paperback and ebook. If you use a platform's free ISBN, it will usually be tied to that platform. We help you plan ISBNs for all your editions together.
Hardcover binding costs more to produce, so the printing cost per copy is higher, and on print-on-demand that cost comes out of every sale. Platforms set a minimum list price that covers it. We show you the printing cost so the price still leaves you a royalty.
Yes. Many authors add one later, for example before a holiday season or once the paperback has proved itself. The interior may need small adjustments and the cover needs a new hardcover file, but the editing and core design are already done.
