Basic Publishing

Basic Publishing Package

The Basic Publishing package is for authors whose biggest risk is the text itself. We review, edit, proofread and format the manuscript, check it against platform rules and prepare it for release, so the words are right before anything else is spent.

  • Editors in-house, never subcontracted
  • Every edit shown as a tracked change
  • Revisions included until the brief is met
  • No lock-in on standard services
4.7/5 from 400+ reviews

Who it is for

For a finished draft that has not had a professional edit

Most first-time authors reach the end of a draft having read it so many times they can no longer see it. Typos survive, a character's eye colour changes in chapter twelve, and the same phrase appears on three consecutive pages. Readers notice all of this, and reviews mention it.

Basic Publishing deals with that problem first. It does not try to sell you a launch campaign or a custom illustration package. It gets the manuscript into a state you can publish with confidence, and leaves the decisions about covers and promotion to you.

What is included

What the Basic Publishing package includes

  • Professional manuscript review: a full read with notes on structure, clarity and readiness
  • Editing for clarity, consistency and flow, keeping your voice
  • Proofreading for spelling, grammar, punctuation and typographical errors
  • Formatting of the manuscript to a clean, consistent standard
  • Compliance checks of the manuscript against the publishing platform's content and file rules
  • Publishing preparation: guidance on the remaining steps to release

How it works

How the package runs

1. Review

An editor reads the whole manuscript and sends notes on what works, what needs attention and how ready it is.

2. Edit

Edits made as tracked changes with comments, so you accept or reject each one and the book stays yours.

3. Proofread and format

A separate proofreading pass after your edits are in, then consistent formatting throughout.

4. Prepare

A check against platform rules and clear guidance on the next steps to publication.

What it is not

What Basic Publishing does not include

To keep the package focused, it does not include cover design, illustration, distribution set-up or marketing. Many authors already have a cover, or want to choose a designer separately; others plan to upload the book themselves once the text is right.

If you want more of the process handled, Economy Publishing adds formatting set-up and step-by-step publishing guidance, and Ultimate Publishing adds author consulting and distribution. Any single service, such as cover design, can also be added on its own.

Why editing comes first

Why the text is the right place to start

A strong cover sells the first copy. The text decides whether the reader finishes, recommends it and buys the next book. Spending on design and promotion before the manuscript is ready usually means paying to send readers to a book that disappoints them.

Editing first also saves money later. Changes to a manuscript are cheap; changes to a laid-out, published book mean new files, new proofs and sometimes a new edition.

Questions

Questions about Basic Publishing

Still unsure about something? Talk to a specialist — no script, no sales pitch.

A professional manuscript review, editing, proofreading, formatting, compliance checks against the publishing platform's rules, and guidance to prepare for release. It is focused on the manuscript itself. Cover design, distribution and marketing are not part of this package but can be added separately.

Both include editing and proofreading. Basic Publishing adds a professional review of the whole manuscript, which suits authors who want an honest read on the draft. Economy Publishing adds formatting set-up for the platform, budget consulting and guidance through each publishing step, which suits authors who want to be walked through release.

Editing for clarity, consistency and flow at the sentence and paragraph level, followed by a separate proofread. If the review finds deeper structural problems, such as a plot that does not hold together, we tell you and quote developmental editing separately rather than hiding it in the package.

We check the manuscript against the publishing platform's content and formatting rules, such as metadata that matches the book, rights to any images or quoted material, and file guidelines, so the book is less likely to be rejected or flagged when you upload it.

Yes. Many authors choose Basic Publishing for exactly that reason. You receive the edited, formatted manuscript and guidance on the next steps. If you would rather we handle the upload and set-up, choose a fuller package or add the service.

The timeline depends on the length of the manuscript and how much editing it needs, so it is quoted with the project. Your own review of the tracked changes is part of the schedule, and we plan around the time you need.
