The problem

On a tight budget, the risk is spending in the wrong places

Authors publishing on a budget rarely overspend in total. They underspend on the things readers notice and overspend on the things they do not. A common pattern: a costly marketing package bought before launch, a manuscript that was never professionally proofread, and a book whose interior was formatted in a word processor and looks it.

The Economy package puts your money where it protects the book: editing, proofreading and a clean interior. Then it includes a session on budget, so the rest of what you spend, on a cover, ISBNs or promotion, is planned rather than impulsive.

What is included

What the Economy Publishing package includes

  • Editing for clarity, consistency and flow
  • Proofreading as a separate final pass
  • Formatting set-up of the interior to your platform's requirements
  • A compliance check of the files and listing details against platform rules
  • Budget consulting: where to spend, where to save and what to do yourself
  • Publishing guidance through account set-up, upload and release

Where the savings come from

How we keep costs down without cutting corners

Doing only what matters most

The package covers the work that most affects how a book reads and looks inside. Everything else is optional.

Guidance instead of done-for-you

We guide you through steps you can do yourself, such as account set-up, rather than charging to do them for you.

Using free options where they are good enough

For example, a platform's free ISBN can be fine for some authors. We tell you when it is and when it is not.

No unnecessary formats

If your readers buy ebooks and paperbacks, there is no need to pay for a hardback edition on day one.

How it works

How the Economy package runs

1. Budget session

We agree your total budget and where it should go, including costs outside this package, before work begins.

2. Edit and proofread

Editing with tracked changes for your approval, then a separate proofreading pass.

3. Format and check

Interior set up to platform specifications, and the files and listing details checked against its rules.

4. Guided release

Step-by-step guidance as you set up your account, upload the files and publish.

Honest limits

When Economy is the wrong choice

If your manuscript needs structural work, such as a plot that does not hold or a nonfiction argument that wanders, line editing alone will not fix it. We will tell you after the first read, and you can decide whether to add developmental editing or revise it yourself first.

Economy is also not designed for colour-illustrated books, which need image preparation and colour layouts. For those, see the Full Color packages.

Finally, Economy assumes you are willing to do some steps yourself with our guidance, such as creating your platform account and approving the proof. If you would rather hand the whole process over, Ultimate Publishing is the better fit, and the difference in price buys you time rather than a better-edited book.

Questions

Questions about Economy Publishing

Still unsure about something? Talk to a specialist — no script, no sales pitch.

Editing, proofreading, formatting set-up for your publishing platform, a compliance check against its rules, budget consulting and guidance through account set-up and release. Cover design, illustration and marketing are not included but can be added if your budget allows. Your quote lists each item in writing.

First-time authors and self-publishers with a fixed budget who want the essential professional work done and are happy to handle some steps themselves with guidance. It suits text-led books such as novels, memoirs and straightforward nonfiction. It is less suited to illustrated books or authors who want every step handled for them.

A conversation about everything your book will cost to publish, not only our fee. We cover cover design options, whether you need your own ISBNs, proof copies, and realistic promotion spending, then suggest where to spend and where to save for your goals.

No. Many budget-conscious authors already have a cover or prefer to source one separately. We can advise on what makes a cover work for your genre, or quote our cover design service as an add-on. If you design your own, we can tell you whether it meets the platform size and spine requirements.

The editing is done by the same in-house editors to the same standard. What changes between packages is how much else is included, such as consulting, distribution or design, not the care taken with your text. Every edit is still tracked and shown to you, and revisions are included until the brief is met.
